Greece is a land of natural forces boldly traced in fierce mountain ranges. A land blessed with a richness of flora and a wealth of people; a land where a glorious past fashioned in rock invades the present. It is more than a visual experience, it invades the senses, it stimulates and questions the mind.

Lawrence Durell expressed it so eloquently in three short lines: `Other countries may offer you discoveries in manners or lores or landscape; Greece offers you something harder - the discovery of yourself.'

Through an in depth treatment of this diverse country we are going to introduce you to many of the lores and the manners and lead you to some fascinating locations and landscapes. If you thought you knew Greece well, just wait until you have explored these pages and find out if you really do know the country as well as the authors.

Pages throughout the Greek section will be liberally sprinkled with nuggets of background information. Before reading on, why not test your knowledge against the following questions?

1. What is 'horta'?

2. How do you work out the name of a church in Greece?

3. On which island was Sappho born?

4. What are those woolly looking nests hanging from pine trees?

5. What is an 'archondiko'?

6. How do you correctly pronounce 'agios'?

7. Where will you find a petrified forest?

8. Which is the second largest island in Greece?

9. On which island was Zeus born?

10. From which island can you most conveniently trip over to Ephesus in Turkey?

If you have not scored 10/10 then you certainly need to read on.
